Members will be elected for a four year term, commencing on December 1st, 2010 and ending on November 30th, 2014, to the following offices:
a) MAYOR (one (1) is elected by all electors of the Town).
b) COUNCILLORS (one (1) to be elected for each of Wards 1 to 6 inclusive)
c) YORK REGION DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD (English Public)
(one (1) to be elected by all public school electors of the Towns of Whitchurch-Stouffville and East Gwillimbury).
d) YORK CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD (English Catholic)
(one (1) to be elected jointly by all English language separate school electors of the Towns of Whitchurch-Stouffville, King and Aurora).
e) LE CONSEIL SCOLAIRE DE DISTRICT CATHOLIQUE CENTRE-SUD (French Catholic)
(one (1) to be elected by the French Language separate school electors of the Region of York).
f) LE CONSEIL SCOLAIRE DE DISTRICT DU CENTRE-SUD-OUEST (French Public)
(one (1) to be elected by the French Language public school electors of the Region of York).
- If a particular office has been filled by ACCLAMATION, it will not be listed on a ballot and no ballot will be provided to the elector.
- An Acclamation occurs when only one Candidate puts his or her name forward to run for the office. As a result, the person is automatically declared to be elected to the office and a vote is not required.
ROLE OF COUNCIL
Section 224 of the Municipal Act, 2001 states:
(224) It is the role of council,
- to represent the public and to consider the well-being and interests of the municipality;
- to develop and evaluate the policies and programs of the municipality;
- to determine which services the municipality provides;
- to ensure that administrative practices and procedures are in place to implement the decisions of council;
- to maintain the financial integrity of the municipality; and
- to carry out the duties of council under this or any other Act.
ROLE OF HEAD OF COUNCIL (MAYOR)
- Section 225 of the Municipal Act, 2001 states:
“(225) It is the role of the head of council,
(a) to act as chief executive officer of the municipality;
(b) to preside over council meetings;
- to provide leadership to the council;
(d) to represent the municipality at official functions; and
(e) to carry out the duties of the head of council under this or any other Act.”
