Expanded and modernized community centre and museum facilities coming soon to Vandorf! The construction of the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum Visitor / Community Centre will create a new, quality venue for culture, heritage, and community celebration activities in our Town. A completely barrier-free accessible addition linking the Vandorf Public School and Bogarttown Schoolhouse buildings on the museum grounds will be constructed starting this spring to open in 2011.
The additional programming space (9,000 ft2), with its high level of flexibility, upgraded kitchen/ catering facilities and quality AV presentation systems, will provide an enhanced setting for community functions including receptions, continuous learning opportunities, and business meetings. It will also enable the Museum to introduce increased and new types of public programming using new technologies and more interactive media.
The Exhibition Gallery on the main floor will allow the Museum to host travelling exhibitions from across Canada and beyond as well as to present more exhibitions highlighting our community’s own dynamic stories. The Hands-On Discovery Room is sure to be a hit with children of all ages. And the future conversion of the Vandorf Public School made possible by this expansion will create a permanent exhibition celebrating our Town’s unique and exciting history from the time of First Nations up to 1971 - when our current municipal boundaries were established. The L-shape of the Visitor/ Community Centre structure enables the Brown House, the “jewel” of the Museum site, to be framed in the initial view for visitors as they enter this vibrant public facility. It further creates a sheltered outdoor courtyard space with covered performance or presentation areas for outside programming and enjoyment.
The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville gratefully acknowledges the financial assistance of the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario through the Building Canada Fund – Communities Component Program to support this project.
This fundraiser event will be held at Nineteen on the Park and will feature a theatrical performance, originally performed in 1912, focusing on the women’s suffrage movement. There will also be a silent auction, gift bags, live music, and a wine and dessert reception. (Fixed price dinner option at the Corner House restaurant; call for details!) Tickets are $40.00 and proceeds will go toward the purchase of specialized equipment to enhance the programming and preservation capacity of the new Visitor/ Community Centre building.
