Subsidy
The Town of Whitchurch-Stouffville believes all children have the right to access recreational programming, regardless of ability to pay. Through partnerships with the Region of York and with Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program, there are limited subsidies available for those under 18 years of age.

New “JOIN IN!” Subsidy Program
Working to eliminate financial barriers to participation, this subsidy program covers all areas and ages of leisure programming.

For more information on subsidy programs, please call Cathy Richardson at 905-642-7529 x 324 or cathy.richardson@townofws.ca  for more information.

safe and enjoyable for all participants. If you or your child is in need of support to be able to participate in our programs, please contact us at leisure.services@townofws.ca  or 905-642-PLAY (7529).

Inclusive Recreation – Adapted Adult Daytime Programming
Everyone is encouraged to participate in our programs, and every effort will be made to integrate individuals with special needs. We are proud of our partnership with Community Living York South whose mission is supporting people with an intellectual disability to live, learn, work and participate in the community.

Adapted Gentle Fit
This class focuses on light activities to stimulate coordination and movement. Ideal for all adults, including those with special needs who are working on sensory skills, range of motion or light fitness. Class is adapted to accommodate those in wheelchairs or those needing assistance with their activities. Facilitators are required for participants who cannot participate independently. Facilitators attend free of charge. A great social class for all involved.

Adapted Aquatics Program
The Town also recognizes the fact that some individuals require a gradual entry into the regular programming stream. As a result, the adapted aquatics program was created to meet this need.
This program offers 1:1 support available by volunteers, part of the PLAY BUDDIES program, who work with the support of a qualified supervisor. Many of the volunteers have taken advanced leadership courses and all are put through training specific to their support duties so that they are familiar with swimming skills and water safety.

With the supervisor as their resource, volunteers are able to work with individuals in building on their current skills to develop swim and water safety competence. The goal is to work on progressions suitable to the needs of the individual and to determine personal bests, while keeping in mind opportunity for social interaction among other classmates.

The adapted aquatics program has proved to be a very positive and encouraging opportunity for those who need that little bit of extra attention. Parents are encouraged to communicate directly with the staff and volunteers so that progress is identified and issues can be worked through. The program ends with a Pizza party after the last class for participants, volunteers and staff.

Play Buddies – volunteer opportunities
