The following analysis outlines employment trends in the individual communities located within Whitchurch-Stouffville. Analysis for the Ballantrae community is based on the 2004 survey, since the area was outside of the survey area in 2005.
Stouffville
As of the year-end 2005, there were an estimated 4,902 jobs in the community of Stouffville, up from 2,917 in 1998. In 2005, the primary employment sectors in the community were personal services, manufacturing and retail trade, which accounted for 21.2%, 19.8% and 19.2% of employment, respectively.
Major employment growth occurred in the utilities, public administration and construction sectors, which reported an increase of 52, 194 and 169 employees, respectively, between 1998 and 2005. In fact, all employment sectors were strong with employment gains throughout. Of note, employment in the personal services and business services sectors fared well, growing by 105.3% and 96.7% between 1998 and 2005.
Ballantrae
Ballantrae employment rose 89.3% between 1998 and 2004. There are currently 352 people working in 52 businesses in Ballantrae. Health care and social assistance is the dominant sector in Ballantrae, accounting for 30.7% of employment, followed by the business services sector at 18.6%.
Significant employment gains in Ballantrae were experienced in the following sectors: business services (550.0%, or 55 new jobs), public administration (500.0%, or 8 new jobs), primary services (183.3%, or 11 new jobs) and personal services(122.2%, or 33 new jobs). A minor employment decline was experienced in manufacturing which accounted for a loss of 3 jobs.
Gormley
Businesses and employment in Gormley both increased since 1998, recording corresponding increases of 98.3% and 31.3%, respectively. As of year-end 2005 there were 1,893 jobs and 88 firms in Gormley. The major employment sectors included manufacturing, construction, and personal services, accounting for a corresponding 22.7%, 16.5%, and 14.4% of jobs.
Since 1998, the wholesale trade sector and construction recorded the largest employment increase in Gormley. Wholesale trade grew 200%, adding 6 new jobs. The construction sector witnessed a significant gain in employment, growing 100% and adding 250 new jobs.
Vandorf
Despite a net gain of one firm in the area since 1998, employment in Vandorf declined 12.5% over this period. However, it is important to note that employment growth in the area has increased recently, by 12.8% for 2004 to 2005. In 2005, there were 537 jobs in 49 businesses, compared to 48 firms employing 615 workers in 1998. The major employment sectors in Vandorf are manufacturing and construction, which accounted for 39.8% and 26.0% of jobs in the area as of 2005.
Employment growth was strongest in the businesses services sector, which grew 80% adding 8 new jobs. Employment declines were felt strongest in the wholesale trade, education, primary and personal services sectors, dropping 94.4% (152 jobs), 46.7% (21 jobs), 30.0% (3 jobs) and 17.5% (10 jobs), respectively.
