We like to think of our facility as the "village green" - the
hub of our municipality; a congenial centre of culture, information and
relaxation; a place of community.
The Whitchurch-Stouffville Public Library houses 65,000 English, French
and foreign language books, magazines, newspapers and audio visual materials
including talking books, music cassettes and cd's, interactive cd's, linguaphones,
video cassettes and video games.
Our reference department has a large range of information on hand including
government documents, current and historical data relating to our community
and a local report file.
The Art Latcham Magic Collection is a special collection of 375 rare magic
books and magazines.
Library History The library dates back to 1886 at which time it was known as The
Mechanic's Institute. It became a free public library in 1899. The first
permanent library `home' was built in 1923 at 7 Main Street East, through
a grant from the Carnegie Foundation. The library moved to a store front
in 1974 and then to 6240 Main Street in 1977. The library
celebrated its 100th birthday on February 17, 1999. Mission Statement To provide a multimedia collection, programmes and an information
source which will allow citizens of the community equal opportunity to stimulate
and satisfy their individual leisure, learning, cultural, intellectual and
