  Farming and Agriculture

  Forestry
About 21 percent of the land area in Whitchurch-Stouffville is covered by forest, most of which is privately owned. There are 11 tracts of York Regional Forest comprising 1064 hectares (2629 acres) owned by York Region and managed by the Ministry of Natural Resources. The largest tract of Regional forest covers 333 hectares (823 acres) in the northeast corner of Whitchurch-Stouffville (Vivian Forest.)
 
       
  Oak Ridges Moraine
The majority of Whitchurch-Stouffville is located on the Oak Ridges Moraine which is an immense geological feature formed by glacial action 14,000 years ago. Four major river systems originate in Whitchurch-Stouffville from the moraine, including the Rouge River and Duffins Creeks which flow south and the Holland and Black Rivers which flow to the north.
 
       
  Soils
Soils are grouped into 7 classes based on their suitability or limitation for agricultural use. The first classes are suitable for sustained production of common field crops. The next two classes
(3 and 4) are physically marginal for sustained arable agriculture. The fifth class is capable of only pasture and hay with the sixth and seventh only for mild pasture.
