  Traffic Control Devices Back
Traffic signals allow traffic to pass through an intersection safely. They allow traffic from all directions to flow smoothly and efficiently.

Stop signs control the flow of traffic and provide a safe environment to enter an intersection.

Overuse of stop signs reduces their effectiveness and often creates other problems. When not justified, the signs are often ignored by drivers, improperly used or contribute to erratic behavior as drivers speed up between signs.

Did you know?

- When a light is flashing red, motorists are required to stop before entering a signalized intersection. A flashing red signal should be treated as a four way stop and entrance should only be attempted when they way is clear.

- When a light is flashing amber, it means that the other approach has a flashing red display and motorists should proceed through the intersection with caution.

- When the signals are out and all lights are dark, the intersection should be treated as if it is an all-way stop.

- In order for the pedestrian "walk" signal to be displayed, it must be activated by pressing the pedestrian cross signal. This will allow enough crossing time.

- When the "Don't Walk" signal begins to flash, it is an indication to pedestrians not to start crossing the intersection. Pedestrians that are part way across may proceed across the road.
