All Municipal water supplies in
York Region are subject to treatment and must adhere to the
requirements of the (MOE) Ministry of Environment Drinking Water
Objectives.
Municipal water supplies are disinfected with chlorine and are
continuously monitored to ensure the required disinfection levels are
maintained.
Water is also tested regularly for bacteria by the Region at the well
supply and by the Town in the distribution system by the Town. If
disinfectant levels are not within an acceptable range an alarm is
triggered and immediate corrective action taken including the shutdown
of the affected water supply.
If tests reveal the presence of harmful bacteria, the water is
considered to be unsafe. The Ministry of the Environment (MOE) and the
Medical Officer of Health (MOH) are notified immediately. A Boil Water
Advisory may be issued by the MOH if circumstances warrant.
All residents on a private water supply, particularly those with
shallow dug wells should sample their water supply every six months.
Sample bottles are available through York Region Health Services.
Residents are reminded that it is a contravention of the Town's Water
Use By-law 96-187-WS to have a connection between the Town water supply
service and private water services, wells, cisterns and private
pressure pumps, etc.
